AHIP and Carrier Certifications 2020: Start Now for a Smooth AEP
Have you started your AHIP certification? With the 2020 Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) just around the corner, this is the perfect time to get all your certifications (and recertifications) done. AEP will be here before you know it!

What is AHIP Certification?
America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) certification is required for agents wishing to sell Medicare Advantage Plans with drug coverage (MAPD) and stand-alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) in the upcoming AEP 2020 season.
The certification is in place to ensure that agents are Medicare compliant.
What you need to know about AHIP certification
AHIP is a two-part course: AHIP Medicare Training (and recertification) and AHIP Fraud, Waste and Abuse Training.
AHIP Medicare Training
The course includes five parts and a final exam.
Part 1 – Overview of Medicare Program Basics: Choices, Eligibility, and Benefits
Part 2 – Medicare Health Plans
Part 3 – Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
Part 4 – Marketing Medicare Advantage and Part D Plans
Part 5 – Enrollment Guidance Medicare Advantage and Part D Plans
Final Exam
Once you complete the training modules, you’ll click the “Attempt quiz now” button to begin the exam. You will have three attempts (per purchase) to pass the exam, and you will need a 90% score to pass.
According to the AHIP user guide, “[t]he final exam consists of fifty (50) randomly selected questions [to] cover all five portions of the training. Each attempt has a two-hour time limit which a user must be prepared to sit for in a single continuous period.”
Exam tip: The AHIP is an open book test. You can print out the modules and use your notes on your exam!
AHIP Fraud, Waste & Abuse Training
After you complete the AHIP Medicare Training course and pass the exam, you’ll have access to the Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Training course. When you have completed the modules, you’ll take a test. You will have unlimited attempts until you reach a 70% passing score. The modules include:
- Nondiscrimination Training
- Medicare Fraud, Waste, & Abuse
- General Compliance

How much does AHIP certification cost?
It costs $175 to take the AHIP Certification exam. However, most carriers offer a discount if you take the test through their broker portal. The typical discount is $50.00. Some carriers offer AHIP reimbursements, based on production.
