As an independent agent, your digital presence matters more than ever. Your senior clients are online, searching for everything they need—including insurance agents. If you’re not online, they’re not going to find you.

In the last few posts, we’ve looked at why agents need a website and how to get yours done quickly and easily.

In this post, we want to show you the importance of building your digital presence for growing your insurance business.

What is a digital presence?

Your digital presence is how you show up on the web. If you are active on social media, you are showing up online.

Did the local news website mention your community fundraising efforts? In this case, someone is publishing information about you and contributing to your online presence.

Where to start

Your website plays an important role when building your digital presence. Whether you’re in the process of making your website or in the planning phase, you will need to secure a web address or domain name (e.g., www.yourbusinessname.com).

Many websites sell domain names. Moreover, they’re easy to use. Just type in your business name and the software will show availability, address variations (if the address you want is taken), and pricing.

Once you secure your domain name, you’ll be on your way to building your online presence via your website.

Tap into social media

At one time, your website was the way to establish your digital presence. It is still an essential tool for helping prospective clients find you.

As social media grew in popularity, people started to use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to create awareness about their businesses.

Now, both your website and social media activities contribute to your online presence.

You can use social media to connect with prospective clients who may be in the market for the products you sell.

For example, it’s easy to create a business profile page on Facebook (versus using your personal profile). You can share information about events, insurance news, and important dates.

Once you get started, it also helps to create a posting calendar—one that works best for your schedule. Whether you post once a week or once a day, the key is to be consistent.

Learn from the competition

When it comes to building your digital presence, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel!

In addition to accessing the plethora of online resources (search ‘digital presence’), take note of what others in the industry are doing. Larger agencies with bigger marketing budgets can be a great source of inspiration.

Do you like how they interact with their audience on social media? How often do they post and what are they sharing? Do you enjoy their blog posts (the ones they share on Facebook to bring traffic to their website)?

Have patience, show up often, be consistent

According to statistics, in 2019, there will be approximately 284 million internet users in the U.S. That includes many of your ideal senior clients.

Now more than ever, showing up online is an essential part of growing your insurance business. Maybe you’ve done well without an online presence. However, imagine boosting your business—and thriving—by publishing your website and posting regularly on social media!

It will take time. Also, consistency will be necessary. However, as you start showing up, the business growth opportunities will be worth the effort.
